When I was younger and going through a rough time, I decided to start a gratitude journal. I was home sick a lot and watching a lot of Oprah. That lady has so many great ideas. The rules for a gratitude journal are to list 5 things that you are thankful for each day. In order to avoid writing the same obvious “family, friends, etc.” each day, the list must be specific to that day.
I kept the journal for many years, a chronology of the little things, the quotidian that made up my happiness. Some days my list was pages long. Some days I struggled to make my five. Today was an easy day:
- I am so grateful for all of the love, hugs, messages and kind words from so many of you after Friday’s darker post.
- Doctor Who. I watched last night’s episode in bed this morning and The Doctor’s speech at the end was amazing.
- Today I road-tripped to Syracuse to spend the afternoon with one of my cousins. We played at the science museum and then toasted bloody marys over lunch and great conversation. I am grateful for all of it!
- “Silver Lining” by First Aid Kit. I played this song on repeat on my drive today.
- Snuggles with Cooper.
