While Austin is proving to be a lot more diverse than my fellow New Yorkers assumed of the great state of Texas, I have noticed a severe lack of Jews. I’ve eaten my weight in tacos, but I haven’t had a decent bagel since June and people look at me funny when I make reference to things being kosher. I come from the land of Bar Mitzvahs, school closings for Jewish holidays and a Kosher Dunkin Donuts; some of my favorite people are Jews! So this has definitely not gone unnoticed.
So it was with great excitement that while perusing the internets for cake recipes for my Sunday Dinner tomorrow night, I came across a recipe for Jewish Apple Cake. The smells wafting from my kitchen now are helping to ease some of my nostalgia (have I been here long enough to use the word nostalgia?) of home. And to all of you who recognized Yom Kippur today, I hope you had an easy fast.
